WordPress is the most popular web publishing system in the world, but is it also the best in the world? In this post, Emmi Gereb shares her views on the system’s strengths and weaknesses, and explains when this is the right tool for you to build a website.
What is WordPress?
We like giving pet names to the ones we love. So should we call this Content Management System, CMS, publishing system, web administration system or web publishing system? In this post I have settled for ‘content management system’.
WordPress is therefore a popular content management system that is often used to build websites. It enables you to easily add text, images, links and other content onto a website, but also to build in more complex solutions if you need to.
WordPress statistics
At the time of writing, WordPress has been downloaded 22,669,608 times, but this figure will probably be much higher when you take a look for yourself.
Given the fact that the number of total active websites is estimated to be more than 1.3 billion according to a survey published by Netcraft, it means that approximately 455,000,000 websites currently use WordPress. This is the equivalent of approximately 20% of all self-hosted websites using WordPress.
Some of the most successful companies in the world prefer WordPress as their CMS, including: TED, NBC, CNN, TechCrunch, People magazine, NFL, Best Buy, CBS Radio and UPS. These are just some of the Fortune 500 companies that use WordPress.
According to WordPress itself, they run 25% of the Internet. If you are curious, have a look at some more WordPress statistics, where you will also find a great infographic and a brief history of WordPress.
So why should you choose WordPress – here are my eight most common reasons:
There are many advantages of using WordPress to build your company’s website. Here are some of them:
- Easy to use
- Unlimited development possibilities
- Scalable
- Simple search engine optimisation, making it easier to be visible on Google
- Option of having a presentation page, web shop and blog in the same place
- Code and design freedom
- Integrable
- Secure
What kind of websites can you build?
- Website rich in content
- Web shop
- Website with member functions
- Multisite (if you have several websites, but want to maintain them under one single installation)
If you want to run a website with WordPress, all you need is a domain and a web host. WordPress software is free, so you can download it, use it and modify the code without having to pay anything. It is also ‘open source’, so it is available to everyone to study and modify based on their own needs.
WordPress is user-friendly and independent of any suppliers
It is incredibly easy to get started with WordPress. The appearance of the administration section has been built to be user-friendly. And instead of being dependent on a company as a supplier with its own content system, you have a system that you can move wherever you want, with endless possibilities to build new functionality.
